Lomo LC-A $150 Before Instagram, before Hipstamatic, before iPhoneography, before the iPhone, before digital, before hipsters, before the ‘Lomography’ company, before the Holga and before the Diana, the Russians were taking pictures with huge vignettes and saturated colours. This is the original Soviet LC-A, not the Chinese re-make. I loved the shit out of this camera for about five rolls of 36. It’s been in a box for about 2.5 years but worked great before that. No scratches, just pure communist* metal and glass. *I don’t actually know if communists used this camera.

Akai MPC 1000 $800 The MPC is the hip hop sampler. Get anything less and you’ll end up making jazz fusion, or something shit like that. It’s loaded up with the JJ OS. Don’t be put off by that whack looking website — it’s a replacement operating system that’s way better than the original. It adds stuff like multi-track recording and an editor for your midi sequences. It also has a 128mb RAM upgrade. Which doesn’t sound like much, but it really is. The RAM is used to load every sample you’re using in a song into memory. So if you had 128, 1mb samples, you’d max it out. That’s unlikely, but I constantly maxed out whatever tiny amount of RAM was in there originally. I said a hip hop the hippie the hippie to the hip hip hop, a you don’t stop the rock it to the bang bang boogie say up jumped the boogie to the rhythm of the boogie, the beat. The above lyrics are copied wholesale from a website that had a banner ad for ‘hot girls in your area’. I think they’re incorrect.

It makes some pretty rad bass sounds and some other wizzy wizzy ping ping whoop whoop zing zing sounds. I used this so infrequently that it’s still in it’s box. Saeco Via Venezia $200 Get rid of your coffee pods and your Nespresso do-dat. Make coffee properly — manually. This little machine is all stainless steel (body and boiler) and has good pressure for a home machine. It’s just had a service so it’s in tip top condition. The steam arm gives you a nice single hole jet of steam that textures milk really well. It also has some stupid attachment that makes bubbles in the milk, if you like bubbles in your ‘eXpresso’, then by all means use it. But I’d advise against it. The only thing Saeco attempted to automate with this machine was the tamping. So instead of compacting the coffee into the portafilter yourself, it does it when you attach it to the machine. It’s pretty easy to get used to. We got a new machine as a wedding gift so this had a service and went in the cupboard. I should have just sold it then. I can make a pretty killer espresso in this machine. I’ll give you a run through of how to use it if you pick it up.
